“Sing Street” is a movie that should be on your list if you’re seeking a bit of inspiration. The story speaks to the challenges of a Dublin teenager, Conor, who is forced to change schools because of his parents’ separation and financial woes.

Through no fault of his own, Conor has a transition forced upon him, and life becomes sad, confusing and complicated.

Such is the nature of life. Whether intended or not, some transitions become apparent to us only when we’re a few years into them, yet we fail to realize it. Conor is experiencing external change and internal adolescence. Something is happening to him, but he’s not exactly sure what it all means.

There Is A Breakdown in “Obviousness”

When we find ourselves in unknown territory, we may feel disoriented and without our bearings. There is a breakdown in “obviousness” during which we don’t know what to do. This becomes apparent because our usual ways of dealing with life aren’t working anymore--such as trying to control a situation to make it turn out like we want, giving up or becoming separated from life.

Whether we want to or not, a new season has been ushered in. If we ignore this new reality, life goes into neutral and we lose our sense of purpose and aliveness.

To move through this crossing, what’s required is a different response than what we normally do. We must invent a new possibility for ourselves. Make a declaration or commitment to this future and embrace a new conversation with life.

As Conor confirms, we do have a choice. The questions is, are we willing to turn into, or away from, our reality.
